Tour Description
Castle Peak sits above the Donner Summit area at just over 9,100 feet, and it earns every foot of elevation. From the ridgeline you get an unobstructed sweep of the Sierra Nevada — Lake Tahoe to the southeast, the Tahoe National Forest rolling out in every direction, and a silence that is hard to find anywhere closer to the highway. This is one of the most rewarding hikes in the greater Lake Tahoe area, and Tahoe Adventure Company's guides know it well in every season.In summer and fall, Castle Peak is a premier day hike — accessible, dramatic, and varied enough to keep any group engaged from trailhead to summit. The final approach to the true summit involves a short Class 3 scramble over loose granite, which is manageable for most adults with a guide. For groups who prefer to skip the scramble, the ridgeline views just below the summit are equally spectacular. We offer guided hiking tours to Castle Peak for individuals, families, private groups, and corporate outings, with the pace and distance tailored to whoever is joining us that day.

Year-Round at Castle Peak
Castle Peak is one of the few areas in the Lake Tahoe region where TAC operates in both summer and winter. The same terrain that makes it a rewarding hike in July makes it a spectacular snowshoe route in January. If your group is planning a multi-season trip to Tahoe, Castle Peak is the destination that delivers in both directions. Ask us about combining a summer hike with a future snowshoe return trip.
Why Go With a Guide
The Castle Peak trailhead is accessible and well-marked, but the upper mountain opens onto exposed ridgelines where route-finding and weather awareness matter. Our guides are trained in wilderness first aid, know the terrain in all conditions, and carry the gear needed to keep your group safe above treeline. More importantly, they know the stories — the geology, the wildflowers, the history of the Donner Pass area — that make the hike something more than a walk uphill.

Is Castle Peak suitable for beginners?
The full summit route is moderate to strenuous and better suited to hikers with some experience. We offer a shorter half-day option to the ridgeline that works well for fit beginners. Let us know your group's experience level when you book and we'll recommend the right format.
How far is Castle Peak from Lake Tahoe?
The trailhead is approximately 35–40 minutes from Tahoe City via Interstate 80 near Donner Summit. We can advise on directions and parking when you book.
